BEFORE YOU WELD A FRAME
A welded steel frame can create a very strong opening.
But before you choose that route, make sure you have also planned for what happens around the frame — water, temperature, condensation, insulation, coating repair and finish.
01 · THERMAL + MOISTURE
STEEL MOVES HEAT AND COLD
A continuous steel frame can conduct exterior temperatures toward the interior.
In cold climates or heated spaces, interior-facing steel can become cold enough for moisture in warm indoor air to condense on it.
That does not mean steel is a bad choice.
It means the assembly needs a real thermal-break and insulation strategy.
VERIFY
- Where is the thermal break?
- Where will insulation go?
- Is metal continuous from outside toward the finished interior?
- How will condensation be controlled?
02 · WATER
THE FRAME STILL NEEDS A WATER PLAN
Welding creates the structural frame, but it does not automatically flash or weather-seal the opening.
You still need to decide how water is handled above the opening, how the corrugated steel is sealed, and how the exterior joint will remain protected over time.
VERIFY
- What protects the top of the opening?
- What supports the exterior sealant?
- Is the system relying primarily on exposed face caulk?
- How will the joint be serviced later?
03 · CONTAINER COATING
WELDING CHANGES THE CONTAINER FINISH
Welding and grinding can damage the protective coating around the cut opening.
Those affected areas need to be cleaned, prepared and protected again to help prevent future corrosion.
VERIFY
- What coating will be removed or burned?
- How will bare steel be prepared?
- How will the repaired area be primed and protected?
04 · INSULATION + FINISH
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE STEEL FRAME IS DONE?
The welded frame may be complete, but the finished opening still needs insulation, exterior trim, an interior jamb and a surface for casing and finish work.
VERIFY
- How will the frame be insulated?
- What becomes the finished exterior trim?
- How will the interior jamb be built?
- What will interior casing attach to?
05 · FABRICATION + LABOR
WHO IS BUILDING IT?
A welded system may also require steel fabrication, fitting, welding equipment, grinding, coating repair and skilled labor.
For some builders that is completely reasonable.
For a DIY installation, those extra trades and steps can become a major part of the project.
